A brief look into the past:
The Neighbourhood Ministry Outreach program of our church was started with the intention of sharing the resources and blessings we have received from our benevolent God, with our immediate neighbours. We had our humble beginnings in 2012 in a space provided by the Tamil Baptist Church, providing free tuition to the children of Appasamy street and two years later in 2014, was blessed to move to our Church owned premises on a floor above the Sevika Sangham Boys Hostel, ensuring quality education support to children, infusing good values and also supplementing with nutritious snacks. Medical camps and health & hygiene awareness classes were also conducted occasionally. A Wednesday prayer meeting for women also was conducted till the year 2020 when the Covid lockdowns unfortunately brought about a suspension of all activities.
Our Activities today:
After the Covid break, in June 2022 we restarted house visits and prayer at the center with our Counsellor Mrs Gladies Grace on every Wednesday attended by women from the neighbourhood.
This year we are glad to have initiated a Women's Empowerment program involving Skill Training for the women, in collaboration with the CSR program of the Equitas group. The women have mastered skills like blouse cutting and stitching, churidar stitching, masala powder making, detergent, phenyl and soap oil making, candle and incense making. The products fetched good sales in our Parish fete and sale, was also on sale at the Equitas exhibition and today successfully selling in the small retail shops in the neighbourhood.
The activities of Neighbourhood Ministry are funded by the Church and coordinated by Mrs. Misha Ukkur and Preetha Mathew .We continue to be enriched by the invaluable guidance and services from all our Vicars in the past and present, our pioneers Dr. Mrs. Mini Mathen and Dr. John Mathai, along with Mrs. Susan John ,Mr. Wilson Chacko, volunteers from the Suvisesha Sevika Sangham, the Youth and other organizations and willing members of our Church, literally upholding our motto, “Lighted to Lighten”.
The Madras Mar Thoma Church Yuvajana Sakhyam embarked on a mission trip to Shenkottai between September 29th and October 3rd as an outreach programme.
We were led by the Mar Thoma Mission field in Shenkottai and delved into the daily lives of the poor and needy, gaining insights into their unique experiences and understanding their standard of living. We were given a first-hand experience of the depth of their poverty but could also see that their joy was in simple things like their Church and their community of believers.
Through thoughtful interaction, we were able to engage with their children and bond with them through games and music. Overall, this experience proved to be a humbling one with greater appreciation for the many blessing that we take for granted.
